One Formulation Change, Seven Markets, and a Deadline That Does Not Move
A speciality manufacturer sells a mixture into seven European markets. Each market wants a safety data sheet in its own language, in the current CLP format, with a Unique Formula Identifier printed on the label and the matching poison centre notification dossier lodged through ECHA.
Then the formulation changes.
Someone in regulatory affairs must now re-author seven documents, re-classify under GHS, regenerate the UFI, resubmit the dossier and reissue the label — by hand, in a word processor, from a substance data spreadsheet that one person maintains. Meanwhile on site, the chemical register is a binder, the last inventory count is a year old, and nobody can say within a working day which of the 900 substances on the premises fall under a restriction that changed last quarter.
This is not a management-system failure. It is a substance-level failure, and it is the specific problem EcoOnline was built to solve — before it was built to do anything else.

Two observations are worth drawing from that table. First, the acquisitions are complementary rather than overlapping — emergency response, lone worker protection and ESG reporting do not duplicate one another or the chemical core, which is a more disciplined pattern than a vendor buying the same capability twice. Chemical platforms demonstrate well and differ substantially, so the script matters more than the feature list. Five requests separate the products in this category.
Five requests that reveal the difference
- Author a sheet from scratch, live. Not a pre-built example — a new mixture, classified under GHS, output in two languages. Time it. This is the capability most vendors describe and fewest demonstrate end to end.
- Change a formulation and follow the consequence. Ask what the system does to the UFI, the PCN dossier, the label and the sheets already issued in other markets. The answer reveals whether the substance is genuinely the record, or whether documents are still the record with a database around them.
- Scan a container and watch the classification. Barcode receipt should pull the sheet, classify under GHS and flag any regulatory concern without a human keying anything. Ask what happens with an unfamiliar supplier product.
